This is the personal story of Núria shared through our website to explain to the world her fight against epilepsy
I want to explain my life experience with epilepsy… and all the challenges I have faced during my life… You will see that there have been a few.
It all started at 9 years old. I spent 3 days in a coma in Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona as a result of encephalitis and meningitis. The truth is that I was very lucky because I could have become paraplegic or even die (I don’t want to get dramatic).
Fortunately, I managed to get out of the coma without further consequences. Well, this is not quite true, I had a sequel that has been living with me for more than 40 years. Yes, you guessed. Epilepsy and also, drug-resistant.
From here, those who know the disease, already know what it means. And for those who don’t, I’ll explain. I’ve have been continiously staying in hospitals to see what type of epilepsy I have, medication adjustments by the trial and error method, to find the balance between the side effects of the medications while still controlling crises…
It has not been easy for me to continue my studies. I fell asleep in class, some course I had to repeat … But with effort and the help and support of people who love me I have been able to jump over obstacles to try to lead a normal life.
Today I am a social integrator, I live in Reus and I have 2 amazing children in good health, which is the main thing. I am very excited about the future that lies ahead.
In a few weeks, I will have surgery at the Hospital Clínic to try to definitively control my seizures. I don’t deny it, I am a little nervous, but the idea that surgery can definitively control my crises keeps me going.
In a few months, when I’ll be recovered, I will be happy to explain how it went.
I write these lines because I sincerely believe that it’s needed a lot of awareness, training, and understanding in society towards this disease and people who have it. If we can help someone who is afraid to fight to have a full life, loose that fear, I will consider myself more than satisfied.
